"Until you do right by me, everything you think about gonna fail." ~ Whoopi Goldberg as Ms. Celie, The Color Purple

Yes, I started this article with a quote from one of my favorite movies. Why you ask? Because it rings so true. What does it mean? It means that until you can do right by others, everything you think about for yourself is going to fall short of your wishes.

True Success is Reached by Helping Others Become Successful

You work hard. You make sacrifices. It's only fair that you should achieve a certain level of success right? To a point, yes. However, there is something to be said for the effort you put into helping others succeed, too.

We are programmed to expect something in return for helping others - it's human nature. Maybe it's simply to be appreciated or to get something physical in return; something that would validate that you helped another person.

Returning the favor when someone does a good deed is perfectly fine. After all, that's what makes the world go 'round: supply and demand, give and take. So helping others succeed and not expecting something in return all the time isn't exactly normal - life just doesn't work that way.

That being said, the completely opposite end of the spectrum isn't the right way to go either. The whole "when and if you do something for me, I'll do something for you." Imagine if that's how we all lived…waiting for others to make the first move. Nothing would get done would it?

The reason for helping others shouldn't be because you'll get something in return. The best reason should be to see the joy of making even a small difference in someone's life. Begin forming the building blocks of your success by reaching out and helping others. Truly successful people will actively seek ways to help others achieve their goals. By helping others get more of what they want, we in turn get more of what we want. In other words, our success will come in direct response and proportion of how we help others. In contrast, unsuccessful people will first ask "what's in it for me?"

Carrying an Attitude of Gratitude Instead of a Chip on Your Shoulder

Having an attitude of gratitude is the most important mind set for you to carry on your walk through life. Until you are truly happy with all of the things you have in your life, and yes, everyone has at least a handful of blessings that they can be grateful for, you aren't going to know true happiness.

Do you live your life fretting over something you don't have? Do you focus on scarcity or abundance? Do you hoard money for fear of losing it? Or spend freely knowing there's plenty where that came from?

If you follow in the steps of most people, much of your energy is spent focusing on what you don't have. You need a shift of attitude and you need it NOW! Start each day making a list of five things you have to be grateful for and review the list throughout the day when you find yourself slipping back into your old habits.

Each day, you'll find it easier to be grateful. As you continue to practice this abundant thinking, whatever it is you felt you were lacking, will soon be overflowing. Your attitude toward everything will change: life, relationships, money.

Carrying an attitude of gratitude instead of a chip on your shoulder will make a real impact on your ability to be emotionally and even physically positive. The longer you feel true gratitude, the more you benefit in all aspects of life. The discovery will be amazing.
